Inspiration
Sumamal Teja is deeply driven by the vision of elevating community handwoven textiles beyond everyday utility, transforming them into works of art that generate income, foster pride, and truly strengthen the local economy. Her ultimate goal is to “bring Thai textiles to the global stage” by preserving traditional wisdom while integrating contemporary design, encouraging younger generations to see Thai fabrics in a fresh light—not merely as local handicrafts, but as fashion with deep roots and a promising future. Role in the Nong Bua Lamphu Handwoven Textile Academy As the academy’s leader in design innovation, Sumamal works closely with multiple weaving groups, conducting hands-on workshops, creating new collections, and developing marketing strategies that highlight the distinct identity of local handwoven textiles. She is equally committed to educating the younger generation—helping them recognize the value of Thai fabrics while equipping them with the skills to sustain and expand this heritage for years to come.

Expertise / Special Techniques
Sumamal Teja is a highly skilled designer with extensive expertise in creating patterns for both handwoven cotton and silk fabrics. Guided by her core belief that “Every textile pattern must begin with a deep understanding of the fabric itself and its intended purpose,” her work reflects a harmonious integration of local wisdom with a systematic and contemporary design process.
       1. Design Philosophy
Sumamal adheres to the principle of “Weaving for Practical Use,” ensuring that every design aligns with Type of fiber – Cotton suits clean, simple, and crisp patterns, while silk is ideal for intricate and detailed motifs.
Fabric surface – Patterns should complement, not compete with, the fabric’s sheen or base color. Intended application – Designs are tailored for specific uses, whether in clothing, bags, or shawls. She often incorporates naturally inspired patterns—such as Khid, Kab, and Phung—and refines them with modern rhythm and flow to appeal to younger generations.
        2. Designing from the Loom Sumamal specializes in pattern design directly from the weaving stage, a method distinct from post-weaving embellishment. This process includes Calculating warp and weft counts to match each intended pattern. Loom drafting for heddles to ensure motifs are accurately produced on the fabric. Pattern placement on the fabric width—whether centered, along the edges, or strategically positioned—optimizing the fabric for garment construction and fashion applications.
         3. Pattern Composition & Color Use Emphasizes pattern rhythm by alternating large and small motifs to avoid overly plain designs.
Uses natural dyes or pastel and earth tones to harmonize with contemporary fashion trends. Incorporates “hidden patterns”—such as subtle central stripes that become a focal point when tailored into garments.
          4. Connecting Patterns with Community Identity Sumamal places strong emphasis on local textile motifs—such as Dok Kaew, Dok Phikun, and Long Nam—reinterpreting them into geometric forms. This approach modernizes the design while preserving its Thai cultural essence.

Opinion on the Preservation and Development of Local Textiles
The preservation of local handwoven textiles in today’s era must go hand in hand with development that meets the needs of the younger generation—especially in terms of design, which should convey a fresh, modern image of Thai fabrics, breaking away from the old stereotype of being “only for older people.” Developing Thai textiles is not just about safeguarding traditional patterns; it is about daring to design something truly unique—blending contemporary styles, new color palettes, mixed materials, and fashion-forward patterns—so that Thai fabrics can become a wardrobe choice for all ages, especially youth and working professionals. Preservation, therefore, is not merely about keeping textiles intact, but about ensuring that “Thai fabrics continue to live on” through the fresh perspectives and creative energy of the new generation.
